Uinta Basin

The Uinta Basin covers nearly all of northeastern Utah. Rolling sagebrush planes are surrounded by lofty mountains in every direction. The northern border is formed by the high alpine peaks of the Uinta Mountains. The great cliffs of the West Tavaputs Plateau create the southern border. The Wasatch Range hugs the basin in the west and the eastern edge crosses into Colorado.

The Uinta Basin includes a vast area of land, but the population is sparse in this corner of the state. Duchesne and Vernal are the largest cities in the area. You’ll also find some amenities offered in the smaller towns of Roosevelt and Rosemont. The Uintah and Ouray Reservation, home to the Northern Ute Tribe, can also be found in the Uinta Basin. The culture, history and natural splendor of Utah’s northeastern corner makes it a pleasure to visit any time of year.

This is home to the Northern Ute Tribe, the state’s namesake, which is comprised of three bands of Utes — the Whiteriver, Uncompahgre and Uintah. This is the second largest reservation in the country, with 4.5 million acres of land in three counties of northeastern Utah.
