A beacon in the rugged and beautiful landscape of southeastern Utah, the Valley of the Gods Bed & Breakfast is a gem for travelers looking for a convenient, comfortable place to bed down during their outdoor adventures near the Four Corners region.
The aptly named bed and breakfast has a vibe that reflects the stunning landscape, with stone walls and wood beams, as well as an eco-friendly philosophy, with solar and wind power. Built in 1933, the historic stone ranch house boasts views of the breathtaking Valley of the Gods (known locally as “the other Monument Valley”) and the Cedar Mesa Cultural and Recreational Management Area in the heart of Red Rock country. In fact, it’s the only home within the 350,000-acre public land area, and offers a rare opportunity to go truly off-grid, but with all the amenities that make a stay so memorable.
With a wealth of natural landmarks — Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Lake Powell, Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Natural Bridges National Monument — there’s a reason why visitors from around the globe flock to this region in Southern Utah. Hiking, climbing, rafting, mountain biking and horseback riding are just a few of the activities on tap in these parts. Photography, bird watching, geology, archeology and simply relaxing in the warm, dry climate are also suitable for any age range.
Whatever adventure you decide to embark on, Valley of the Gods B&B is a perfect spot for a little downtime. Lounge on the property’s 75-foot porch, and drink up views of the desert in all directions. Grilling out and alfresco meals add to the enjoyment of the outdoors — especially at night, when you can dine outdoors under a blanket of Utah stars. The b&b also features an indoor communal living room to chat or read with your family and other guests.
Proprietors Gary and Claire Dorgan, who have been running the place for 21 years, are lovely and inviting. The pair provides their clientele access to the ancient cultural ruins and Native American historic sites, as well as to the recreation and sightseeing the Four Corners region is known for. Claire emphasizes that the location is very rural, so most people come prepared with their own gear like mountain bikes or climbing equipment. However, she is more than happy to help you find a guide and/or outfitter to help you best prepare for and explore the area.
Room décor is rustic and cozy, and some of the rooms — three of which are in the main house, and one is located in a separate building — have stone walls and fireplaces. Every morning, you can gather in the dining room with other guests for a hearty breakfast to plan your adventures for the day. Another bonus for budget-minded adventurers? Single rooms run from $145, with double occupancy running $175-$195. Just make sure you book as far in advance as possible, as this serene retreat is a popular one in this heavenly part of the world.
Valley of the Gods B&B is year-round, and located 9.5 miles from Goosenecks State Park and seven miles from US Scenic Byway 163 on Valley of the Gods Road in Mexican Hat.
