Voted the "Top Ski Resort in the West" for 2024 by SKI Magazine readers, Powder Mountain superlatives include "terrain for days," "massive," "super fun" and "more than 500 annual inches of snow." The resort is 60 miles north of Salt Lake City International Airport, about a 75-minute drive by car. The second half of the drive combines the Ogden River Scenic Byway with Powder Mountain Road, State Route 158. In 2016, the resort welcomed the addition of more than 1,000 new acres of terrain with two new chairlifts and capped day passes to keep the skier density low. It is the most skiable acreage of any resort in the United States.

Resort Information

Who is Powder Mountain for?

It’s no surprise that Powder Mountain is great for powder hounds. With more than 8,000 acres of terrain covered in 500 annual inches of powder, Pow Mow is ideal for experts to challenge themselves and beginners to learn how to ski powder. Intermediate to expert skiers prefer runs off the Paradise lift, but beginners can find plenty of terrain at the Hidden Lake and Sundown lifts.

Guided Backcountry Skiing

If the phrase "Powder Safari" strikes your fancy, a backcountry tour of Powder Mountain is the season highlight you’ve been waiting for. Get into the sidecountry with a Powder Mountain guide who knows where all the sweet runs are. You can get in the thick of approximately 1,000 acres and a 3,000 vertical drop if you’re willing to take a short hike up to James Peak. This awesome terrain includes huge, wide-open bowls, thick trees and steep chutes. Aren’t you glad you have a guide who knows it well?

Parking and Transportation

Free parking is available without reservation at the Timberline, Hidden Lake and Sundown base areas. Road conditions can get slippery during the winter – always follow canyon requirements, which may include clearance minimums, chains and 4WD. You can help reduce traffic congestion by parking at the Eden Park n’ Ride lot and hopping on a UTA Ski Bus or complimentary Pow Mow shuttle (free for season pass holders). See more Utah ski vacation tips.

Night Skiing

Powder Mountain offers night skiing from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exclusively at the Sundown Lift. All-night tickets are $19 for all ages and dates.

Restaurants and Places to Relax

Hearty ski lodge food is all part of the great winter experience, but sometimes it’s nice to have something new to break up your ski day. Take a lunch break at Hidden Lake Lodge, which features authentic Mexican fare including freshly made tortillas and homemade salsas. Remember to eat wisely, since a burrito coma can make you a little slower immediately after lunch.
